Jan 2018 – IoT Wearables expansion – Freeway facilitates boom in new projects

Dec 2017 – 80% Capacity at -40 Degree C! Our Low Temp Lithium Polymers Open The Door To New In-Vehicle Applications

For many In-Vehicle applications the challenge is often more about low-end temperature operation rather than the high-end.

Patented low temperature chemistry allows good performance between -40 and +45 degrees, but the batteries will continue to operate at up to +60 degrees C with lower efficiency.

This new low temperature range of lithium polymer batteries from Freeway is allowing vehicle based battery powered products to extend their environmental flexibility and reduce costs associated with thermal control of electronic modules.

The minus 40 operational milestone breaks through the traditional minimum operating barrier of -20 degrees and enables high level performance. Capacity at -40 degrees is around 80% of the nominal capacity with 0.2C discharge rate.

Mil-Std minimum capacities are typically set at 40% of nominal, so the 80% rate we are able to offer is a significant technological step

May 2017 – Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) trending for new product introductions

There is an emerging trend for safety critical applications to move straight from existing chemistries to Lithium Iron Phosphate.

In the past we saw design authorities taking their development plans in stages…Typically:

NICAD –> NI-MH –> LITHIUM ION or LITHIUM POLYMER

Now we are seeing the Ni-MH component being skipped in favour of a jump straight to Lithium Iron Phosphate.

There are several advantages of LiFePO4 in terms of its green credentials and most importantly its failure mode with no potential for thermal runaway, which is associated with other lithium chemistries.

Lithium Polymer and Chemistries such as Lithium Cobalt Oxide still have a strong place with their built in protection circuitry and higher energy densities, but there is no doubt that more and more safety critical applications are looking seriously at Lithium Iron Phosphate for new products.

March 2017 – TPPL (Thin Plate Pure Lead) an Ideal Lithium Alternative in certain applications

TPPL (Thin Plate Pure Lead) batteries are made up of combinations of 2 Volt cells. The ultra-low ESR allows in excess of 200 cells to be put into series. The in-series blocks can then be combined in parallel, offering an almost limitless range of options to suit your power requirements.

Jan 2017 – Security Market – Lithium design wins indicate shift in market

More and more security design authorities are looking toward Lithium for their next generation Alarm panels and control back-up systems.

Along with Lithium Polymer cells, with their flexible form factor, Lithium-Ion and Lithium Cobalt Oxide (which has very high volumetric capacity) are being well received by end customers who are looking for lower replacement frequency.

Where products can be easily replaced with very low maintenance costs, other chemistries remain more cost effective. However – For many applications where maintenance costs can be significant, a long life – high reliability and performance product can make a real positive difference.
